I am studying abroad in Paris for Fashion during January-April. I have no idea what to bring any suggestions?!?
I am not sure what kind of clothes to bring or even how much. I also don’t know if my flat iron will work there.. Any suggestions or advice you have will be highly appreciated. =] Also a few things I will be doing there include..A tour of Fondation Pierre Berge Yves St. Laurent, le Musee de la Mode, les Ateliers du Costume, and Jardins de Versailles. Meeting with a French fashion designer, a rep. from a French modeling agency,a meeting with a professional fashion photographer and a meeting with reps from PromoStyl and Nelly Rodi. Along with a 4 day trip to Milan, Italy to have a meeting with an editor or journalist of a better- known Italian fashion Magazine, Meeting with a design school in Milan, have a lecture on Italian fashion Industry, and a tour of the Lake Como silk factory and shop in the Lake Como area. I am so excited to have this experience! Sorry this is so lengthy but I want to get any advice or suggestions as possible to make my experience even greater! Thank you!
What a wonderful experience ahead of you!
No, your flat iron will not work there as the voltage is different and you would need a special adaptor, but you can buy a decent iron very cheaply from any French hypermarket or electrical store, and the places where you will be staying might well lend you one to tie you over. Since you do not say where you will stay, bear in mind that some hotels do not like you to do washing and although you may wash your smalls and dry them overnight inconspicuously, other clothes may have to be entrusted to the hotel for washing or dry-cleaning, at a certain cost.
OK. For clothing, understated smart will be the key. No way out clothes or eccentricities, even if you think of yourself as trendy. Well cut clothes, two or three suits (can be trouser/ skirt ) that you can switch around for formal events. For more casual occasions such as visits to museums, Versailles etc … wear classic clothes in which you feel comfortable. Well cut trousers and a plain top are perfectly acceptable. There are some elegant tunic tops which give a smoother line than tuck-in blouses, or you can wear an open loose blouse over a vest style top. In your free time wear whatever you like, even jeans (not frayed , holed or distressed) but bear in mind that smart French and Italian women tend to go for simple uncluttered styles in conservative colours. Have a little black dress for evening wear if you have to attend a reception: you cannot go wrong with that.
You do not say which part of the USA you live in. Bear in mind that Paris is cold and wet in the winter, and even Lake Como can be freezing in January. You need a warm coat.
Do be careful with your accessories. You can wear inventive jewelry to enhance a plain outfit but anything flash, bling and tacky will convey the wrong idea. You will be on your feet a great deal so do not go for excessive high heels and try to select shoes that are neither too hip or to mumsy-ish. The huge handbags that were made popular by certain celebrities are going out of fashion so choose one that has style and will go with your outfits without being too conspicuous.
Perfume is a delicate matter and vertical ones (Poison for instance) are not liked by quite a few people. Go for classics, like Chanel 5, and in fact wait till you are in France to buy a new one, as the selection there is awesome and cheaper than in the US.
You might have the opportunity to buy an outfit there, but clothes are cheaper in the US and you are going for three months so you need a certain range of clothing that travels well.
I wish you all the best whilst you are there. Have a wonderful time!

Ruth Crawford Seeger: Portrait $16.98 Crawford is a neglected but significant figure in the development of American music in the 20th century. Perhaps it’s that she took 15 years off from composing in the middle of her life to help found the American folk revivalist movement carried on by her children Michael, Peggy, and stepson Pete. But her early works define their own new territory next to contemporaries and friends Henry Cowell an… |
